There is nothing the clarinet player depends on more, than the condition of his reed and reeds are sensitive and delicate. You hardly ever meet a player who is constantly happy with his reeds. If something goes wrong and the instrument squeaks in a solo, it is usually the reed that gets the blame and that's not always wrong). It is a fact that reeds change when you play them and they wear out

  • The reed is the main part of the clarinet. Without it you cant play the instrument. It allows you to blow threw the clarinet to make the noise.
  • Place the thin end of the reed in your mouth to moisten it while you put your clarinet together. Check the corked joints of the clarinet; if they're dry, rub a small amount of cork grease on each. With the upper joint in your left palm, use your left-hand fingers to press down the tone hole rings.
  • Then you try a new reed and this reed being the same strength as your old one will feel real hard. Try to rotate your reeds. No real answer on how long they will last. It all depends on you! and the way you practice and play.
